Fabric Shopping in Downtown L. A.

Choosing a fabric for my home or for the shop used to be a problem for me.  After so many mistakes spending unnecessary money and time driving around too much, I have become a better fabric shopper. Just like shoes, perfume or clothing, fabrics are very personal. From texture, color, and pattern to quality and feeling,  choosing the right fabric can be a nightmare.  While some like strong colors, huge prints, or  harsh texture, others prefer soft, quiet and subtle fabrics. For that, I believe every chosen fabric reflects the personality of the buyer.

Stay Focused on Your Budget

When it comes to selecting a fabric, the first thing I think about is how much I want to spend on the total project. That way I don't go over the budget.  For example, I spent 150.00 on an awesome 8 foot 1970's sofa and the  upholstery guy charged me 450.00 to do the job. On top of that, I needed 15 yards of fabric which I had  to add-on to my budget.  These are things that I keep in mind to keep my self focused.

To save money, I go right to the source; the Downtown L. A. Fabric District. This is roughly the area between 9th and 8th streets and San Julian and Maple Street. There are over 50 shops and unlimited fabrics to choose from.  Michael Levine and Home Fabrics are two of my favorite ones.

Michael Levine

Michael Levine has two locations across from each other on Maple Ave. One of these has everything you need for upholstery. From sofa fabrics to cow hides, you will find it all here.  You will find the latest styles here and also be sure to look for their clearance tables in the back of the store where you can get some fantastic deals on high quality fabric.

Home Fabrics

My second recommendation is Home Fabrics located at 910 s. Wall St. (213) 689-9141. This is a very organized shop with two floors of higher end fabrics  and a good selection of trims. They have a great selection of velvet, silks and taffeta and the more you buy the more you will save. If you buy whats left on the role, you will get a better price. I love to browse all the different shops but seem to always purchase from these two stores.  I like how both these stores have the prices on the rolls whereas other stores in the neighborhood seem to price their merchandise  based on the way they perceive you and your ability to pay.

This means the bones of the piece, the hardwood frames and detailing were made to last. Reupholstering allows you to take one of these unique, high quality pieces and make it your own.

Of course an additional benefit is that by reupholstering, you get a top of the line piece of furniture at a fraction of the cost of purchasing a similar item new.

Caban Upholstery

We realize that taking on an upholstering project for some seems like a major task which is why we’re very happy to recommend our neighborhood upholsterer Tonatiuh at Caban Upholstery. He’s a small shop not far from Dodger stadium who does fantastic work at very reasonable prices, he finishes his work on time and even gives you your extra fabric back.

Do-it-yourself at All Size Foam and Fabric

For our do-it-yourself customers, we highly recommend All Size Foam and Fabric in Vernon where you can get all you would need for your project, from beautiful upholstery fabric to replacement sofa legs. It’s a large warehouse space where you can walk in with your old sofa cushion or pattern and be walking out minutes later with new comfortable foam.

Their selection of foam is fantastic and they will be happy to tell you about the different types. And did we mention their prices are really reasonable? Check out their great customer reviews on Yelp.

It's been a typical week at Casa Victoria, another 2 shipments arrived with 20 new items, including this fab vintage ice bucket! You may say to yourself,...."Ice Bucket?" and we say yes! Even ice buckets can be fabulous!

While it's true we are constantly getting in large items such as new sofas, dressers, etc...we are always on the hunt for those unique accessories, abstract paintings or wall sculptures that put the finishing touch on your room.

This ice bucket just in from Santa Barbara is one example of the great accessories that are constantly arriving at Casa Victoria. Its hand crafted and whimsical design make it a truly functional piece of art for your home or the perfect prop for a feature film set.

We do the driving

To keep our shipments flowing in here at Casa Victoria, we do a LOT of driving....to places such as South Dakota, St Louis, New Mexico (our most recent shipment arrived from Arizona)....all the while looking for that beautiful Chesterfield sofa or Murano lamp that's been buried and forgotten in someones big red barn. We also shop all over Southern California, looking for items such as this Italian Arc Lamp by FLOS, which sold within hours of hitting the sales floor. While priced at over $3000.00 elsewhere...our price of $795.00 was a fantastic deal for one lucky client.

We buy items out of LA to get the lowest possible prices, which we then pass on to our clients with fantastic deals. We sell high quality items such as vintage Baker furniture, Marbro lamps, etc. at a fraction of the cost you would pay for them on the West-side or in other cities.
